The meeting reaffirmed the very good and friendly relations between the two Parliaments, based on shared values and principles. Particular emphasis was placed on inter-parliamentary relations, with a view to exchanging visits on both sides.
The Speaker of Parliament informed her Canadian counterpart of the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem, noting that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion. Ms Demetriou expressed her hope that the appointment of a personal envoy of the UN Secretary General will lead to the resumption of negotiations to reach a solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. Ms Demetriou particularly thanked Mr Fergus for his country's firm principled stand on the Cyprus problem and Canada's long-standing support for Canada's efforts to resolve the problem. A practical proof of this is Canada's significant contribution to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, Ms Demetriou noted.
Referring to developments in the Middle East region, the Speaker of the House of Representatives underlined the enhanced role of Cyprus as evidenced by the implementation of the initiative for the creation of a maritime humanitarian corridor to Gaza. Ms Demetriou and Mr Fergus also noted the growing importance of parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue as a means to achieve the goals of security, stability and peace, particularly in light of the complex challenges facing the world today.
Ms Demetriou and Mr Fergus also discussed the issue of the European Union-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), noting both the multiple benefits of enhancing economic and trade exchanges between Cyprus and Canada. The Speaker of the House of Representatives said that a new ratification law is expected to be submitted to the House of Representatives for ratification by the Plenary Assembly.
In the morning, the Speaker of the House of Representatives attended a church service at the Cathedral of Agia Sophia, accompanied by the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Andreas Kakouris. It is noted that in the context of the opening of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Presidents' Meeting, the Speaker of Parliament will attend a reception and banquet at the House of Commons tonight, at the invitation of her British counterpart Sir Lindsay Hoyle.
