Statements by the Chief Electoral Officer Dr. Andreas Hadjipakkos
Today the Chief Election Officers of all electoral districts handed over the ballot boxes to the presiding officers of the 1,864 polling stations that will operate in the 9 June 2024 Elections. The process of delivering the ballot boxes in Nicosia District was attended this morning by the Chief Election Supervisor, Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Elikkos A. Ilias with the Election Supervisor of Nicosia, Prefect of Nicosia, Mr. Andreas Hadjipakkos.
In a statement, the Chief Election Commissioner said that more than 9,000 officials will work together with 3,000 police officers to ensure that one of the most complex electoral procedures will be successfully held on Sunday, June 9. "There is the handing over of caps today in all Districts. We will have 1,847 polling stations in Cyprus and another 17 abroad, in Greece, the United Kingdom and Brussels," Dr Elias said.
Elias called on voters to exercise their right to vote on Sunday, noting that the electoral process will start at 7am until 12 noon, and will resume at 1pm to conclude at 6pm. "I am confident that people will come out to vote. Only ID is necessary or, if one wants, one can vote with just a voter's booklet. I believe we will have an increased turnout in this Election. It is an Election that marks the reform of local government, apart from the election of MEPs," he said.
As he explained, there will be Elections for the election of MEPs, Presidents of Provincial Self-Government Organizations, Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Community Mayors and members of Municipal and Community Councils and School Boards. According to Dr. Elias, the publication of the results is expected to begin on Sunday evening and he expressed the expectation that around 7:30 in the evening we will begin to gradually learn the results for Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairmen of Community Councils. He pointed out that the names of the elected MEPs, members of Municipal and Community Councils and School Boards will be known on Monday morning.
Asked then to say about the process of receiving and keeping the ballot boxes until Election Day, the Chief Electoral Officer explained that the ballot boxes are received by the presiding officer/chairperson of each polling centre, who are also responsible for keeping them until Sunday. He further noted that on Sunday morning, before the opening of the ballot boxes, the presiding officers will stamp the ballot papers with the official seal of the Republic. According to Dr. Elias, all the ballot papers for all the elections will be placed in a ballot box followed by sorting and counting on a per-election basis. The counting will be done at the polling stations themselves.
Finally, the Chief Electoral Officer reminded that voters in the mayoral areas will vote up to six ballots and voters in the Communes will vote up to four ballots. He reiterated that in the Communities, voters also vote for the President of the Provincial Self-Government Organisation and for Members of the European Parliament, in addition to the Community Mayors and members of the Community Councils.
For his part, the Electoral Supervisor of Nicosia said that in the Nicosia District there will be 689 polling stations with approximately 225,000 voters, representing 38% of the total number of voters in Cyprus. "We have 23 Turkish Cypriot polling stations, for which we are ready to serve those Turkish Cypriot voters who wish to vote. We have implemented new technologies for transmitting results electronically and other electronic procedures. I hope that in this way we will reduce the time of issuing the results and reduce any errors."
