[PIO] Awards and Distinctions in Cypriot Cinema

The Department of Modern and Contemporary Culture of the Ministry of Culture announces the awarding of the film by Cypriot director Savvas Stavrou, "Buffer Zone", at the International Short Film Festival Drama 2023. The film participated in the national competition section of the Festival and won a total of two awards: The Drama Queer Award and the Male Performance Award for the young protagonist Andreas Markou.

Specifically, this year, two Cypriot productions participated in the national competition section of the festival. "Buffer Zone" and "Athalassa" by Argyro Nikolaou. Also, another Cypriot filmmaker was distinguished in the international competition part of the festival, Maria Tomazou, who won the Special Award of the International Committee for her animated film "The Tornado Outside".

The film "Caterpillar, Nymph, Butterfly", by Kyros Papavasileiou, which had its world premiere in the competition section of Karlovy Vary 2023, was also a great success.

The film "IMAN" by Korinna Avramidou and Kyriakos Tofaridis continues its successful run at festivals, which in 2023 participated, among others, in the Film Festivals in Sofia, Beirut, Ecuador, Peru, Los Angeles, London, Poland, Alexandria and Amsterdam. The film won several awards, including Best Film at the San Antonio Independent Film Festival in Ecuador, Best Fiction at the INCA Imperial International Film Festival in Lima, (Peru), Special Jury Award at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, (USA), Best Actress for Stephanie Atala at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival (USA), Best Film and Best Director at the London Greek Film Festival (UK), Best Film and Best Director at the London Greek Film Festival (UK).Best Director and Best Director at the London Greek Film Festival (UK), Best Actress for Rita Hayek and Stephanie Atala at the London Greek Film Festival (UK).DOG by Yannas Americanou, as well as the film "Citizen of the Third Age" by Marinos Kartikkis, which won dozens of awards at international festivals.

2022 was an important year for Cyprus as the minority co-production "Mediterranean Fever" by MAHA HAJ (France, Germany, Cyprus, Cyprus, Palestine) won the best screenplay award at the Un Certain Regard of the Cannes Film Festival.
