The Parliamentary Assembly for the Mediterranean (PACE), in the framework of this year's annual awards to personalities and organizations whose actions contribute significantly to the achievement of the Assembly's objectives, awarded Foreign Minister Mr. Constantinos Kombos, in recognition of the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to create a maritime corridor for sending humanitarian aid to Gaza, through the implementation of the Amalthea Plan.
The award ceremony took place yesterday, Wednesday, 15 May 2024, in Braga, Portugal, in the presence of the Secretary General of the CSM, Presidents of the Parliaments of the Mediterranean countries participating in the CSM, as well as other distinguished guests.
Due to the Foreign Minister's prior commitments, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Lisbon, Mr. Elpidoforos Economou, received the award on his behalf. In his address on behalf of Mr. Kobos, Mr. Economou conveyed the sincere thanks of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Cyprus for this recognition, stressing that the maritime humanitarian corridor is a collective effort of the Government of Cyprus and the competent authorities of the Republic, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noting that its sole objective is to make a substantial contribution to the efforts of the international community to deliver humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza.
In conclusion, the Ambassador conveyed the Foreign Minister's assurance that Cyprus will continue to work hard and with all the means at its disposal to carry out this difficult mission, acting as a safe haven in the region in times of crisis.
