The members of the Cypriot delegation that contributed to the extinguishing of the fires in Greece were honoured today by the Ministries of Interior, Justice and Public Order and Health. At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health, the members of the Cypriot delegation received honorary diplomas for their zeal and professionalism.
In her speech, Health Minister Dr. Poppy Kanari said that the decision to send a national team, with the participation of the Fire Brigade, the Civil Defence and the Ambulance Service, proved that the state mechanism worked promptly and effectively and that there is operational readiness, both in terms of manpower and equipment.
"You responded promptly to the State's call and you have undoubtedly demonstrated your professionalism and ethical values. The cooperation between you demonstrates the importance of collective effort in times of crisis," Dr Kanari said, addressing the members of the mission.
She pointed out that the contribution and work shown by the Cyprus Mission is very important for everyone and makes us as citizens feel very secure and proud.
"We are confident that you will continue your worthy work under the guidance of your directors, to whom we also express our deepest appreciation. Continue to be on the front line with strength and security as the citizens of this country rely on your professionalism and operational action," she concluded.
For her part, the Minister of Justice and Public Order Mrs. Anna Koukkidou Prokopiou noted that she feels proud of the assistance of the Cypriot mission in the struggle of the Greek authorities to deal with the major fires that threatened a large part of the country for several days. With your courage, you managed to make a substantial contribution to dealing with the danger, despite the fact that you had to operate in areas with unknown geomorphology and special characteristics," she said, addressing the members of the Cypriot delegation.
Despite any difficulties, the presence and action of the Cypriot mission, as she stressed, was catalytic and its contribution was recognized by both the Greek authorities and the media.
"The operational readiness and the high professional level that you demonstrated in critical moments, fills us with satisfaction", concluded Mrs. Anna Koukidou Prokopiou.
In his brief greeting, on behalf of the Minister of Interior, the Director General of the Ministry, Mr. Elikkos Ilias, expressed pride in the assistance of the Cypriot mission in extinguishing the fires in Greece.
Finally, he warmly thanked all members of the mission for their zeal and self-denial in the battle against the fires.
