The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth announces that due to restrictions and difficulties that arose during the pandemic, but also due to incomplete handling of the situation, it will not be possible this year to carry out the appropriate procedures and the relevant preparation in the desired and properly organized way, for the selection of the proposal for participation in the Venice Biennale 2022.
Specifically, the special advisory Selection Committee that has been appointed found that with the manipulations that had been made previously, before it was convened, it was not possible to ensure the desired participation. Without any responsibility of its own, the Committee cannot now complete its work on the forthcoming Report. In view of this development and in lieu of any other hasty action, the Commission will undertake the preparations to be made in an appropriate manner for the next participation.
At the same time, processes are now being adopted on a new basis to ensure that the selection and preparation of Cyprus' participation is done in a fully transparent manner and in a way that excludes procedures and practices that in the past have also led to results that may have been controversial.
In particular, on this issue. The Ministry has already drawn up a preliminary extended list of suitable persons who could potentially participate in a selection committee, to which proposals from organised bodies from the visual arts sector may be added, if they are submitted.
(b) The aim is to have, on a permanent basis, a broader list of persons with the necessary qualities and qualifications, from which the four members of the five-member Selection Committee will be selected on a case-by-case basis. This will avoid the current process of "ad hoc" selection and/or "administrative appointment", without the necessary transparency, but also without continuity between the committees and the practice followed.
(c) An internal administrative investigation will be carried out in order to identify and correct problems in the whole participation process.
It is noted that the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth is proceeding with similar procedures of greater transparency and coordinated operation regarding the establishment of other relevant committees, such as the jury and the whole procedure for the State Awards, the Committee for the Selection of Artworks for Purchase, the commissioning of the International Festival "Kypria", etc.etc.
