In order to provide correct information and avoid misinformation to parents/guardians and other stakeholders on the course of health education - sexual education, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY) announces the following:

[*]The Ministry of Education and Culture has not made any changes related to this course from 2011 to date. What has changed is the passage of relevant legislation by the House of Representatives in 2022. This legislation provides for the inclusion of the subject in the curriculum of high schools and technical schools, since it was already included in the curriculum of pre-primary, primary and secondary schools. [*]As far as Primary Education is concerned, the course is and will be taught exactly as it has been taught for twelve years, since 2011, without any change. It is noted that at no time during these twelve years has there been any serious problem or complaint. [*]The purpose of the course is to address issues of healthy living in a pedagogically sound manner and to cultivate skills related mainly to the self-protection of children from sexual abuse, the development of healthy relationships and appropriate behaviours, and the reinforcement of empathy and zero tolerance of violence and bullying. [*]The course was and will be taught by school teachers. Teachers have already received and will continue to receive training on the subject, as has been the case for the past twelve years. Teachers who will teach in high schools and technical schools for only six teaching periods within the school year will receive further training. [*]The content of the course has been prepared, over the past twelve years, by educators (university and teacher educators), based on multiple sources, with full respect for the specificities of our children's age. Any references to content published by the World Health Organization or other bodies and organized groups are not relevant to the content of the course.

The Ministry of Education and Science ensures that all lessons in the curriculum, in all classes and at all levels, have been prepared on the basis of scientific and pedagogical criteria and anything that comes to anyone's attention that is outside this framework is ready to be duly evaluated and act accordingly.

On the basis of the basic information set out above, we consider any agitation on this matter, which stems from misinformation, to be unnecessary. The CFCA is at the disposal of all for the resolution of questions or answers to queries, by e-mail: dde-agogi-ygeias-sd@schools.ac.cy (Primary Education) and dme-agogi-ygeias-sd@schools.ac.cy (Secondary and Technical Education).
