Yesterday, Tuesday, 28 May 2024, the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and the Department of Electromechanical Services of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, delivered three (3) minibuses, which have the capacity to transport passengers in seats, as well as Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in wheelchairs, whose embarkation and disembarkation is achieved with appropriate lifting platforms, which are integrated in the buses.

The buses are intended to meet the needs of various Institutions for the Care of Children and the Elderly, and Special Schools, following a decision of the Council of Ministers in February 2022. In the same context, five more buses have been ordered, the delivery of which will be phased in by the end of October 2024.

The Government promotes and supports ensuring the right of movement with the greatest possible independence for persons with disabilities and stresses that it is an obligation of every State, in accordance with the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In this context, the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works will in the coming period also explore additional requests of a similar nature in order to serve other needs.

The appropriately adapted and equipped buses delivered provide safe and quality access to transport services, meeting the needs of both children and adults with disabilities and the special schools, residences and other structures that serve them. Mobility for people with disabilities is a prerequisite for their participation in education, creative employment, independent living and therefore their social integration.

This action is part of the programming for the purchase of vehicles to meet the transport needs of the various Ministries/Departments and public services, helping to facilitate the movement and transport of people with disabilities.
