The Water Development Department (WDD) is responsible for the protection and sustainable development, as well as the rational management of Cyprus' water resources, on the basis of European and National Legislation and the government's water policy.

The objectives it is called upon to fulfil cover a wide range of actions, with the main axes being to ensure the fullest possible coverage of water needs for all uses, to promote the efficient use of water resources and to ensure the quality and protection of water resources and the aquatic environment.

In the field of waste water, full implementation of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC is a priority.

The implementation of sewerage systems for the treatment of urban waste water under the Directive contributes to tackling sewerage problems arising from overflowing septic tanks, which cause pollution and contamination of the subsoil and groundwater due to seepage of waste water into the subsoil. In addition, there are significant benefits from the operation of centralised sewerage systems, such as the production of reclaimed water that contributes to the water balance and sludge that can be used as a soil conditioner.

Today TAI has proceeded with the signature of the Contract for a total value of €1,992,584 for Phase 1 of the project: Design, Procurement, Construction, Installation of a Wastewater Treatment Plant at the New Menoyia Centre and a pipeline connection to the Kofinou Centre, Start of Operation of the Plant, Operation and Maintenance of the Plant - as a defects liability period (Tender No: TAY 12/2023). Total Duration of Phase 1: 27 months.

The Contract was signed by the Director of TAY Ms. Iliana Tofa Christidou and the representative of the Euromarket - Dialynas Joint Venture consortium Mr. Stathis Kyriakou. This signature is an important milestone, as it marks the start of the implementation of the Project for the Construction and Installation of a Wastewater Treatment Plant in the framework of the construction of the Accommodation Centre for Applicants for International Protection and Pre-departure Centre (Lakes) of Larnaca District.

The first phase of the project is being implemented under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Cyprus.

At the same time, the Contract for the 2nd phase of the project was signed: Operation and Maintenance of the Station and the Connection Pipeline with related works throughout the duration of the Contract for a period of nine years for the amount of €192,372, as well as the 3rd phase of the project: Staff Training for a period of two months for the amount of 2,080 euros (Tender No: TAY 12/2023)

The Contract was signed by Ms Natasha Andreou, Head of the Asylum Service of the Ministry of Interior, and Mr. Stathis Kyriakou, representative of the Euromarket - Dialynas Joint Venture.

The Contracts concern the Design, Supply, Construction, Installation, Operation and Maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Lakes Area in Menoyia to serve the new Accommodation Centre for Applicants for International Protection and the new Pre-departure Centre in the community of Menoyia, and Installation of a pipeline and related works to connect to the station of the Reception and Accommodation Centre for Applicants for International Protection in the municipality of Kofinou.
