29 May - European Dams Day - Listen to the water!

European Dam Day - Reservoirs for Europe is an annual day of celebration, established by the European Club (EurCOLD) of the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD). This new annual event was established to highlight the economic, social and environmental benefits of dams and will be celebrated for the first time on 29 May 2024 with the active participation of EurCOLD member countries.

The main objective of European Dams Day is to raise public awareness of the important contribution of dams in promoting sustainable social development and prosperity in Europe. The role of dams and their ability to adapt resiliently and meet increased water needs is critical in addressing the growing challenges posed by climate change.

The Republic of Cyprus, recognising that as an island country with a semi-arid climate, limited water resources and affected by frequent periods of drought, needed to harness surface water flows by constructing a significant number of dams. Today there are 108 reservoirs in operation in Cyprus, of which 58 are classified as large dams according to ICOLD. Although water supply needs can now be fully met by desalination plants, dams continue to make a significant contribution to the country's water supply needs and play a key role in providing water for irrigation. In addition, with the worsening of extreme weather events due to climate change, the role of dams is indisputable in managing water resources and protecting urban centres against flooding.

The Department of Water Development (DWD), as the department responsible for the protection, sustainable development and rational management of Cyprus' water resources, recognises the importance of dams as a key factor in achieving the above objectives. The Department operates on the basis of European and National Legislation and within the framework of the respective Government Water Policy as well as under the Unified Water Management Law of 2010. Within this legislative framework, TAY is responsible for the proper management, maintenance and ensuring the safe operation of all reservoirs in the country. To celebrate the European Day of Dams, TAY has already proceeded with the promotion of Cyprus' dams.
