The Supreme Court, exercising its powers under Article 3 of the Courts Law of 1960, recently revoked its previous decree of 13 September 1974, by which the Famagusta and Larnaca Courts had been consolidated under the dramatic circumstances of the invasion and its aftermath. As a result, the vast majority of cases in the Famagusta District have since been heard in the Larnaca District Court.

Under the new decree, the Famagusta District Court will operate as a separate Court and will be housed, until its return to Famagusta, in a newly built building in the Municipality of Paralimni.

Under the new decree, the Famagusta District Court will operate as a separate Court and will be housed, until its return to Famagusta, in a newly built building in the Municipality of Paralimni. At this initial stage five judges have been appointed, including an administrative President of the Court.

The new Famagusta Court will for the time being hear all civil and criminal cases, except for the Criminal Court, which for the time being will be heard in Larnaca. Consideration will also be given, as necessary, to the prospect of transferring cases of special jurisdiction (Family Court, Rent Control Court, Labour Court, Military Court) from the Larnaca Court.
