The Government welcomes the passage by the plenary session of the House of Representatives of the three bills concerning the reform of Local Government, an imperative necessity for the country.
The implementation of the reform of Local Government will be a legacy for future generations. With the decision of the House of Representatives, which passed the bills submitted by the Government, the way has been paved.
The spirit of cooperation that prevailed allowed decisive steps to be taken after ten years to complete this marathon effort.
This is a development that will bring significant savings in financial and other resources, but above all, it will provide better services to citizens. The new municipalities will gain administrative and financial autonomy, flexibility and increased responsibilities. Local government in our country is becoming a modern system of local governance.
The implementation of the Local Government Reform was one of the prerequisites for the disbursement of resources from the Recovery and Resilience Fund for the implementation of the national plan "Cyprus - Tomorrow".
The other reforms pending in the House of Representatives, which will contribute to the modernisation of our state, should be dealt with in the same consensual spirit.
