In the context of effectively tackling the migration problem and demonstrating zero tolerance of the phenomenon, as the President of the Republic has repeatedly underlined and following relevant instructions to all competent services of the state, a coordinated operation to dismantle a criminal organisation trafficking illegal immigrants to Cyprus was carried out this morning in the Limassol District.

During the operation, in which about 40 policemen, members of the Headquarters Police Department, members of the MMAD, YKAN and YAM participated, five persons of Syrian nationality were identified and arrested, who were detained as members of a criminal organization for the trafficking of illegal immigrants, while new arrests are expected on the basis of warrants that have already been issued.

The activities of this criminal organisation in the last three months were based on the analysis of specific information.

In the context of an effective response to the migration problem, one of the key issues remains the fight against smuggling rings, which also endanger the lives of the illegal immigrants they attempt to transport to our country.

To this end, by decision of the Minister of Interior, a special group has been set up with the terms of reference to examine the revision of the policy concerning Syrian nationals already in the Republic of Cyprus who are involved in trafficking circuits of irregular migrants, in order to prevent further flows. This task force is staffed by members of the Asylum Service, the Population and Immigration Registry Department, the Aliens and Immigration Service, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance.

Instructions have also been given to all relevant Services to take specific measures.

The Republic of Cyprus, within the framework of its international obligations, will continue to take and strengthen measures aimed at managing and preventing migration flows.

As a result of the actions taken and ongoing, asylum applications have significantly decreased recently.
