The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works regrets the inconvenience caused to thousands of our fellow citizens during today's two-hour protest by professional taxi drivers.
Furthermore, the Ministry wishes to inform that the demands of the professional taxi drivers were put on the table before the planned protest, however the Nicosia Taxi Owners and Operators Guild did not suspend the protest.
Specifically, regarding the request of professional taxi drivers to use the bus lane from the GSP to the entrance of Nicosia, at the "Good Evening" lights, it is stated that they were informed by letter on 29 September 2023 that this would be possible from 4 October 2023.
In relation to the carriage of passengers for remuneration by unlicensed professional taxi drivers ("hijacking"), the Ministry notes that consultations have already taken place with all stakeholders and the bill is ready to be sent to the Legal Service for legislative review.
Finally, it is stated that the Ministry considers professional drivers as its partners and the problems facing the sector will be addressed in the context of the proper functioning of public transport.
