The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr.Yannis Panayiotou, participated in the opening session and addressed the Plenary Session of the Global Alliance for Social Justice, which is taking place in the framework of the International Labour Organization Conference.

The Global Alliance for Social Justice was established by a decision of the International Labour Organization Conference in 2023 to promote social justice in the formulation and implementation of public policy and in social dialogue among social partners. The Alliance has more than 250 participants, consisting of national governments, workers' and employers' organizations and international organizations, while the Republic of Cyprus was one of the first member states to respond positively to the invitation of the Director-General of the Organization.

During his address to the plenary session, the Minister of Labour referred to the Government's commitment to strengthening the adequacy of wages and ensuring decent pensions with more social justice in the daily lives of citizens, while he also stressed the determination of our country to actively participate in the Global Alliance for Social Justice through the implementation of specific initiatives launched in cooperation with the International Labour Organization for the realization of the objectives of the Global Alliance for Social Justice.

Specifically, Mr. Panayiotou said in his speech:

"Universal and lasting peace can only be established when it is based on social justice.

This is what we have been defending in this House for more than a century, with our commitment remaining in force for years and decades to come.

For peace between states and peace within states, for peace that leads to the progress of humanity and the well-being of society.

And for a just distribution of the dividends of peace, social justice is achieved through fair labor, fair working conditions and conditions, fair and adequate wages.

To achieve this noble goal, we need evidence-based social dialogue and results-driven policy-making to develop and implement socially just policies and agreements by social partners and political leaders for the labour market of the future.

Strong political will is a precondition for political action, and reintroducing the concept of social justice into the public debate is an important step of political commitment by political leaders.

But this is not enough, as we have the responsibility of moving from theory to practice to achieve tangible results.

On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, a proud partner of the Global Alliance for Social Justice, I am honoured to address the opening session of this important ILO initiative.

We congratulate the Director-General and his team for their efforts to promote a dynamic platform that brings together governments, employers and workers, international and regional bodies and representatives of the academic world, with a commitment to promoting social justice.

Social justice is not just a wishful expectation, but a realistic goal, since it is the result of data-based social dialogue and results-oriented policy-making.

Social dialogue is the most central process of tripartite social cooperation.

It is even more meaningful and effective when it is well informed and documented, based on tools and data, linked to qualitative and quantitative performance indicators, in order to be monitored by citizens and to enhance the accountability of political institutions.

Our government is committed to ensuring better wages and better pensions, for adequate incomes for those actively participating in the labour market, so that we can maximize the potential of our economy and ensure the well-being of our citizens.

Our government is committed to actively participate in the Global Alliance for Social Justice because we truly believe in its purpose and want our Alliance to succeed.

Our key priority in this direction is to raise awareness among political actors at a high level and equip them with the appropriate tools for social justice policymaking.

I am confident that our country's pilot initiative promoted in close cooperation with the Director-General of the International Labour Organization and his team will be used constructively for the next ambitious steps of our dynamic alliance."
