Neither the prisons are unsafe, nor the Ministry remains impassive
In relation to publications and announcements that have seen the light of day regarding the Central Prisons, we declare:
[*]Neither the Department of Prisons is headless, but neither is the Ministry of Justice and Public Order apathetic or inactive in the face of the demands and needs of the Central Prisons. [*]Specifically, in the absence of Ms. Aristotelous, the prisons are operating under the direction of Ms. Athena Demetriou. Under the regulations and following a letter from the Ministry to the Civil Service Commission, Ms Demetriou is officially acting as Deputy Director from today until the end of Ms Aristotelous' leave. [*]The Directorate General of the Ministry remains in contact with Ms Demetriou, as the person responsible for the proper functioning of the Central Prison, and who keeps Ms Aristotelous informed on a daily basis. This was reaffirmed at a meeting between the Minister and Ms Demetriou. [*]Instructions have been given to the Chief of Police to be on full alert to provide any assistance requested by the Prisons Directorate in terms of personnel in order to ensure the smooth operation and the maintenance of conditions of security, discipline and order in the Prisons, given the overcrowding. [*]Regarding the request for the secondment of both Ms. Aristotelous and Ms. Demetriou sent to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order on Friday 23/12/2022 through a long letter, this is being studied in the framework of the procedures provided by the relevant regulations and upon Ms. Aristotelous' return to her duties, a meeting will be held to decide the next steps. Pending the final outcome of the request, Ms Aristotelous and Ms Demetriou remain in their posts and duties. [*]At the same time, instructions have been given to the Chief of Police, in cooperation with the Prison Administration, to further strengthen their personal security measures where and when necessary.
