[PIO] Announcement of the Ministry of Health on the vaccination plan against influenza and Covid-19 for the period 2023/24

Early vaccination against seasonal influenza and SARS-CoV2 is recommended during the autumn and winter months. The vaccines against seasonal influenza and COVID-19 are available free of charge from the Ministry of Health. For preventive and public health reasons, in collaboration with the National Vaccination Committee, it is recommended that influenza vaccination be given to vulnerable and high-risk population groups.

The following groups are at higher risk of severe disease and complications:

1. Adult persons 60 years of age and older

2. Children > 6 months - 15 years of age and other adults with one or more of the following aggravating factors or chronic diseases:

- Individuals with asthma or other chronic lung disease

- Individuals with Heart Disease with severe hemodynamic disturbances

- Individuals in Immunosuppression (inherited or acquired due to disease or

Immunosuppressive/immunomodulatory therapy)

- Individuals who have undergone Organ Transplantation

- Individuals who have undergone Organ Transplantation

- People with Sickle Cell Disease (and other severe haemoglobinopathies)

- People with Diabetes Mellitus or other chronic metabolic disease

- People with Morbid Obesity (metabolic syndrome) with Body Mass Index

( BMI)>40 kg/m2

- People with chronic kidney disease and hepatopathy

- People with Neuromuscular or Neurological diseases

3. Pregnant women of any gestational age, pregnant women, breastfeeding women

4. Children and adults taking aspirin long-term (e.g. Kawasaki disease, rheumatoid arthritis and others), for the potential risk of Reye's syndrome after influenza

For preventive and public health reasons, the following population groups should be vaccinated:

1. Persons in close contact with children <6 months of age or caregivers of persons with underlying disease who are at increased risk of complications from influenza

2. Children > 6 months - 15 years of age

3. Closed populations (staff and inmates of schools, military and police academies, inmates and staff of institutions, recruits to the armed forces, etc.). Conscripts in recruitment centres, especially those recruited during the winter months

4. Health care workers (nurses and other workers)

5. Professionals such as veterinarians, poultry farmers, pig farmers and people in general who have regular contact with poultry.

With regard to vaccination against the disease Covid - 19 the following groups of the population are recommended to be vaccinated:

1.Persons over 60 years of age

2. People of any age living or working in sheltered housing and closed structures

3. Health professionals of any age

4. People with diabetes mellitus

5. People with severe obesity: BMI ≥40 or ≥35 with metabolic syndrome

6. People with severe chronic heart and vascular disease

7. People with chronic severe kidney disease

8. People with severe chronic liver disease

9. People with severe chronic neurological disease

10. People with haemoglobinopathies

11. Pregnant women

12. Immunocompromised and immunosuppressed patients regardless of age such as:

- Individuals on active treatment for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies

- Individuals with a history of solid organ transplantation receiving immunosuppressive therapy

- Individuals with a history of primitive hematopoietic organ transplantation receiving immunosuppressive therapy

- Individuals with hereditary immunodeficiency,

- Persons with HIV infection/AIDS,

- Persons on immunosuppressive therapy including biological agents,

- Subjects with renal failure undergoing dialysis or peritoneal dialysis,

- Subjects receiving or receiving a total dose of >10 mg prednisone/day (=8 mg methylprednisolone) for one (1) month in the last six months,

Vaccination of GHS beneficiaries belonging to high-risk groups may be carried out by the Personal Physician by appointment. Vaccination of non-beneficiaries of the JSIS, but belonging to the high-risk groups, will be carried out free of charge at the Adult Vaccination Centres of the Ministry of Health. If a beneficiary wishes to be vaccinated on the same day with both vaccines (Covid-19 and seasonal influenza), he/she can make an appointment at the Vaccination Centres of the Ministry of Health.
