The Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MPAN), the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (RIK) and the Office of the Maronite Representative are co-organizing an event during which the documentary "Sanna - Our Language" will be screened. The production of the documentary is part of the cooperation between RIK, the Maronite Religious Group and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in support of the revival of the Cypriot Maronite Arabic, an officially recognized minority language of the Republic of Cyprus.
The event takes place on the occasion of the International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated every year on 21 February, following a decision of the General Assembly of UNESCO in 1999. The documentary is directed by Tasos Mourtouvanis, script and journalistic editing by Michalis Terzis. The coordination of the contributors was undertaken by the Office of the Director of Secondary General Education, which is responsible for the coordination of issues concerning religious groups at the Ministry of Education.
Through conducting 25 interviews with native speakers of the language, linguists - researchers, students, teachers, community members and institutional bodies, this production attempts to document the history of Sanna - the Cypriot Maronite Arabic language spoken to date in Kormakitis and the huge ongoing effort to revive it.
The first screening of the documentary will take place on Monday, March 4, 2024, at 19:00, at the RIK Archive.
