The Minister of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Vassilis Palmas, today received the UK Defence Minister, Mr Grant Shapps.
The meeting discussed issues of bilateral interest relating to the situation in the wider Eastern Mediterranean region and the unfolding crisis in the Red Sea, as well as the situation in Europe with reference to the events in Ukraine.
Mr Palmas briefed his British counterpart on the security situation on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey's intransigent stance on the Cyprus problem, with particular reference to the Turkish side's withdrawal from what was agreed on the Pyla issue.
He also referred to the efforts of the Cypriot Government to resume talks to resolve the Cyprus problem and the importance of the appointment of the official delegate by the UN Secretary General, Ms. María Angela Holguín Cuéllar.
Finally, the two Ministers exchanged views on issues related to how to deepen bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.
