The parade was attended by the political, religious and military leadership, as well as Ambassadors and Defence Attaches of foreign countries.

The opening of the parade was preceded by the firing of 21 saluting cannons and the flag-raising ceremony, with the National Anthem being played.

After the end of the parade, the Minister of Defence, Mr. Michael Yiorgallas made statements, during which he said that it is with pride and emotion that we celebrate today the 63rd anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus, a homeland that today is semi-occupied and constantly threatened by occupying Turkey.

He noted that the Republic of Cyprus, despite the difficulties and threats, remains standing, progressing and is a modern, reliable, European state, an equal member of the EU and recognised by the international community, adding that the independence of the Cypriot state is not just an anniversary, but a living historical milestone and a response to all those who are working to destroy it.

He also noted that today we honour the heroes and fighters of our Cyprus, we are inspired by their triumphs, we learn from our mistakes and we deposit in the sacred memory of our heroes our unswerving commitment that we will fight to the end to protect what is in danger and to claim what belongs to us. Yiorgallas sent the message that we will continue to build our defence by strengthening the operational and deterrent capabilities of the NF.
