On the occasion of today's protest of wheat and potato growers in the area outside the Presidential Palace, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment wishes to note once again that the primary sector is a priority of the Government, especially at a time when Cypriot agriculture is facing many challenges in a highly competitive environment.

It is in this context that the meeting of the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides with the Agricultural Organisations took place last week, during which it was decided to provide financial support of €4.3 million. Wheat producers will be granted €2.65 million, equivalent to €6 per tenth and potato producers €1.654 million, equivalent to €55 per tenth.

These decisions demonstrate the good intention of the Government to meet the demands of farmers on the basis of the financial possibilities of the state. The Government supports the Cypriot farmer in every possible way and considers that under these circumstances the continuation of the mobilisations, which are causing inconvenience to thousands of our fellow citizens, is not justified.

We recognise that the impact of the pandemic on the food supply chain and the sharp rise in the prices of energy and agricultural inputs due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine are putting pressure on the agricultural sector, increasing the cost of production. Agricultural production is a very important part of our economy. The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment monitors developments and new data on production costs for all sectors of the primary sector and is in constant dialogue with Farmers' Organisations to support our farmers to stay in the profession, helping to ensure sufficiency with safe and quality food.
