Cyprus in first place in Europe with the cleanest bathing water for the 2nd consecutive year

The European Commission today officially announced the final results for the quality of Europe's bathing waters.

Swimming is an extremely popular and important recreational activity in Europe. The annual assessment of Europe's bathing sites shows how well environmental protection measures are implemented, allowing citizens to make informed decisions about where to go to enjoy Europe's bathing sites.

According to the results of the European Commission's report, Cyprus for 2023 is in compliance with the most stringent requirements of the Bathing Water Quality Management Directive and has fulfilled all its obligations under the Directive.

In conclusion, Cyprus is in compliance with the most stringent requirements of the Bathing Water Quality Management Directive for 2023. This performance ranks Cyprus in the first place in Europe with the cleanest bathing waters. Austria is in second place with 96.9%, followed by Croatia with 96.7% and Greece with 95.8%.

For the 2023 bathing season, which ran from 1 May to 31 October, 123 bathing water sites throughout the coastal zone of free Cyprus were monitored on at least a monthly basis and a sampling was carried out before the start of the bathing season.
