Every year on April 22, millions of people around the world join together to celebrate Earth Day, a global environmental movement coordinated by Earth Day Network and is celebrated in over 175 countries.
The first event took place in 1970 and has since grown into a major annual event. In 2009, the United Nations established 22 April as "International Mother Earth Day" to raise global awareness of environmental issues and the need to protect the planet.
However, despite the strides made in recent decades, there is still a long way to go to protect the planet, ensuring its longevity for future generations.
Earth Day 2024 theme
This year in particular, the day takes on a key significance as the theme of Earth Day 2024 is "Planet against plastics", coinciding with the historic UN Plastics Treaty, which is expected to be agreed by the end of 2024, with over 50 countries calling for an end to plastic pollution by 2040.
This initiative focuses on the need to significantly reduce plastic waste and raise awareness of the negative health and environmental impacts.
Earth Day aims to challenge collective action to reduce plastic use by 60% by 2040, a joint effort for a more sustainable future.
Action to adopt environmentally friendly practices
This day is more than just a date. It is a call to action to adopt environmentally friendly practices to protect the Earth.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, on the occasion of Earth Day 2024 and the theme "Planet against plastics", invites the public to actively participate in initiatives to reduce, reuse and recycle plastics, thus contributing to the achievement of the goals for a more sustainable planet.
