[PIO] Announcement of the Labour Inspection Department on the advertising of hazardous chemicals and distance shopping

In recent years and especially after the pandemic, e-commerce (internet / online sales) has been growing rapidly.An increasing number of products are being marketed through online stores, either online or through Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) or even through international platforms.

Through e-commerce one can also buy chemical products, such as household or professional cleaning products, swimming pool cleaning products, car care products, e-cigarette refill liquids, air fresheners, paints, inks, bookstore products and many others.

Several of these chemicals contain hazardous chemicals and therefore, anyone buying chemicals, whether from a physical or online store, should carefully read the product label and instructions for safe use. For this reason it is necessary that the information concerning the risks of each chemical product is provided to the purchaser immediately and clearly before the completion of any purchase, in order to take appropriate protective measures to avoid negative effects on human health.

In particular and in accordance with the provisions of the European Regulation No. 1272/2008 on classification, labelling and packaging (CLP Regulation), the provision of information concerning chemicals in an online advertisement can be In addition, this information should also be provided in the Greek language.

Recent inspections of online shops selling chemicals in the Cypriot market (such as supermarkets and DIY stores) have revealed high rates of non-compliance with the provisions of the legislation.
