The Health Insurance Agency wishes to inform the public that on 24 November 2023, the date on which the next upgrade of the Information System (IS) will be implemented, a new rule on the filling of repeat prescriptions for medicines will be applied.
Under the above rule, the IT system will automatically calculate the total amount of medicine that the beneficiary is entitled to receive from the pharmacy until the prescription expires and will not allow the pharmacist to fill an additional amount of medicine.
The above rule applies only to repeat prescriptions for medicines. Specifically, if a box contains a quantity of drug sufficient for more than one month of treatment, the additional quantity of drug from each box will be taken into account in the System's calculation of the number of boxes the beneficiary is entitled to receive until the expiration of the prescription.
Example
- The attending physician prescribes drug A at a dosage of one tablet per day for three months.
- Each box contains 50 tablets.
- The IT system will calculate that the beneficiary is entitled to receive a total of 84 (3x28) tablets for the three months that the prescription is valid.
Based on the above, the beneficiary:
- Will be able to receive from the pharmacy one box in the first month and one box in the second month of the prescription (a total of 100 tablets).
- He will not be entitled to receive medicine from the pharmacy in the third month of the prescription as he will have already received the full amount of medicine needed for the three months (for the three months he needs 84 tablets and during the first two months of the prescription he received 100).
- In the third month he will have to use the extra amount of medicine he received from the pharmacy in the first two months.
- In the third month he will have to use the extra amount of medicine he received from the pharmacy in the first two months.
Note that in cases similar to the above example, the IT System will not allow the attending physician to issue a new prescription for that drug before the previous prescription expires.
