The passing of the "Law on the National Coordination Body for Combating Fraud against the Financial Interests of the European Union of 2023" by the House of Representatives, following the submission of the relevant bill prepared by the General Accounting Office of the Republic as the competent authority, regulates the establishment and operation of the National Coordination Body for Combating Fraud against the Financial Interests of the European Union (the Body) and strengthens the existing national legislative framework.

The Body aims to ensure an effective and coordinated response to fraud and irregularities affecting EU financial interests in Cyprus. Acting as a bridge of cooperation between Cyprus and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), the Body shall support OLAF in the performance of its tasks. The establishment of the Body strengthens the country's capacity to meet the requirements of the European Union, including measures for data preservation and access to information, as well as the criminalisation of cases of failure to provide, destruction or falsification of data during investigations.

The establishment of the Body is a step towards strengthening the rule of law by creating an environment that prevents the commission of fraud offences, reinforcing control mechanisms and imposing stricter penalties for fraud.

In addition, the above development promotes transparency, fair administration and effective enforcement of legislation.
