From 06:00 on 31 December 2023 until 06:00 on 1 January 2024, the Fire Service responded to 39 calls for assistance (27 fires, 10 special services and 2 false calls).
On December 31 at 17:55 a call was received for a fire in a ground floor private residence in Kakopetria. Four fire engines from the Evrychou and Lakatamia Countryside Fire Stations responded. The fire was on the roof and inside the house and was brought under control at 20:02. The occupant of the house was aware of the fire and exited the house without danger. The home and its contents were extensively damaged by the fire and heat. The fire appears to have been caused by a faulty fireplace chimney.
At 23:29 a call was received for a fire in a fireplace of a private residence in Agia Fyla, Limassol district. The Agios Ioannis Fire Station "Sergeant Vassilis Krokou" responded with one fire engine. The fire was extinguished before the arrival of the Fire Service and caused slight damage to the area where the fireplace was located. The fire appears to have been caused by a forced rupture of a metal water heating piping mechanism within the fireplace hearth. Two persons, who were in the area, were injured and were transported by ambulance and private vehicle to T.A.E.P. of Limassol General Hospital.
At 00:38 a call was received for a traffic accident after a collision between two vehicles in the area of Polemidion, Limassol district. The Agios Ioannis Fire Station "Sergeant Vassilis Krokou" with a team and rescue vehicle responded. Two of the persons involved in the accident had to be evacuated using rescue equipment as they were trapped in the wreckage of the vehicles and were transported by ambulance to the T.At 01:19 a call was received for a fire in a bedroom of an apartment on the first floor of a two-storey block of flats in Latsia, in the Nicosia district.
At 01:19 a call was received for a fire in a bedroom of an apartment on the first floor of a two-storey block of flats in Latsia, in the Nicosia district. Three fire engines from the Akropolis Fire Station "Sergeant Spyrou Tantis" and the Lakatamia Fire Station responded and the fire was brought under control at 02:02. The room and its contents were extensively damaged by the fire and heat, while the entire apartment was affected by the smoke. At the time of the fire the occupant of the apartment was absent and all apartments of the building were evacuated by members of the Fire Service and the Police. After a search of the building for any trapped persons, which was carried out by members of the Fire Service, a small dog was rescued which was in one of the apartments of the building. The causes of the fire were later investigated in cooperation with the Police.
At 01:19 a call was received for a fire in the basement of a private residence in Paralimni. Two fire engines from the Paralimni Fire Station "Sergeant Adamou Adamou" responded and the fire was brought under control at 02:15. The fire was in a specially designed bedroom space in the basement of the house, the contents of which were damaged. Smoke damage was also sustained to the paintwork of the rest of the basement area and its contents. In addition, a dog that was inside the room died due to smoke inhalation. The occupant of the room was absent from the room at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire will be investigated later in cooperation with the competent authorities.
At 02:15 a call was received about a fire in a forgotten cooking utensil in the kitchen of a house in Lakatamia, Nicosia district. The Lakatamia Fire Station responded with two fire engines. The fire was extinguished prior to the arrival of the Fire Service and a final extinguishing, ventilation and inspection was carried out by members of the Fire Service. Equipment in the kitchen of the home was damaged by the fire and the kitchen area was affected by smoke. In addition, a small dog, which was in the area, died due to smoke inhalation. The fire was caused by the forgotten cooking utensil on a cooking hob.
At 05:55 a call was received for a traffic accident on the old Nicosia - Limassol road, near the Alambra exit. The Akropolis Fire Station "Sergeant Spyros Tantanti" responded with a team and rescue vehicle. The vehicle, which veered off course, overturned on the roadway and two people who were in it were evacuated before the arrival of the Fire Service and were transported by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital.
In addition, the Fire Stations of Paralimni and Xylofagos Terrace during the morning hours (00:17, 00:21 and 03:40) responded to three calls for fires, two motorcycles in an open area in the square of the community of Vrysoules, a motorcycle and a pile of tires in the middle of the roadway in Frenaros and a pile of irrigation tires in the middle of the roadway in the community of Avgoros, respectively. The fire engines were accompanied by members of the Police as the fires were due to arson by unknown, possibly young persons.
