The Fire Service from 6:00 a.m. on January 2 until 6:00 a.m. on January 3 responded to 26 calls for assistance (18 fires, six special services and two false calls).
At 13:22 a call was received for a fire inside an abandoned warehouse in Agios Dometios, Nicosia district. Four fire engines from Nicosia Fire Stations responded to extinguish the fire and the fire was brought under control at 14:28. A large number of old marine vessels, made of fibreglass, were extensively damaged. The fire was secured around the perimeter by the fire brigades and prevented from spreading to the rest of the warehouse and adjacent outbuildings. The causes of the fire are being investigated without ruling out the possibility of malicious action.
At 23:54 a call was received for a fire in a minibus parked in the community of Kanto, Limassol district. Two fire engines from the Monovolik and British Bases Fire Station responded to extinguish the fire. The fire was brought under control at 00:40. Today the causes of the fire will be investigated in cooperation with the competent authorities.
At 02:15 a call was received for a fire in a fruit shop - mini market on Famagusta Avenue in Nicosia. The frutaria suffered extensive damage from the fire and heat. In cooperation with members of the Police, gas cylinders were removed from the fire site and two adjacent apartment buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
The causes of the fire will be investigated in cooperation with the competent authorities.
