The Commission for the Ethics and Protection of Sport (the Commission) announces that it has delivered the report it has completed on the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COE) to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth.
At the same time, the investigation by the Office of the Auditor General of the Republic of Cyprus has been completed and given to the investigating officials. The Commission would like to personally thank Mr. Odysseus Michaelides for the assistance he provided to the investigating officials of the Commission.
The investigation was launched after what was heard in the Committee on Institutions of the House of Representatives on 25.10.2023 and 1.11.2023. In these sessions of the House of Representatives, heavy accusations were heard, which primarily insult and tarnish the Olympic Spirit, as well as the members of the COE.
The accusations were hurled against the President of the COE Mr. George Chrysostomou and its Vice President Mr. Yiotis Ioannidis.
The accusations were hurled against the President of the COE Mr. George Chrysostomou and its Vice President Mr. Yiotis Ioannidis. Of course, accusations were also heard which also concerned the treasurer of the CTO Mr. Alexandros Christoforou.
The investigation of the investigating officials was strictly limited to what was heard in the House of Representatives and the investigating officials did not investigate anything other than that.
As a result of the above, the Honourable Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athena Michaelidou, gave instructions to freeze the funds which were to be disbursed in favour of the KOC.
After an exhaustive investigation, the two investigating officials of the Commission unanimously concluded that everything that has been said against both the President of the CIO Mr. George Chrysostomou and the Vice President Mr. Giotis Ioannidis and the Treasurer Mr. Alexandros Christoforou does not correspond in any way to reality. What they were accused of did not happen and the investigating officials did not find any evidence to confirm and/or justify the fuss created around the COE.
As a consequence of the finding, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth rightly released the funds in favour of the COE.
As part of its duties, the Commission intends to send a letter to the President of the COE, indicating the issues that need to be corrected immediately for the better functioning of the COE.
