The Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, announces that according to the Waste Law (Law 185(j)/2011), health care service providers (private medical practices), as generators of hazardous waste, are obliged to ensure that the infectious and toxic waste they generate is disposed of in licensed medical waste management facilities with which they have a written cooperation agreement for its proper management.
Further to a relevant notification to obligated medical practitioners and having been given a long period of time to comply with the legislation, the Environment Department informs that in the first quarter of 2024 it will conduct a nationwide compliance audit campaign of health care providers in medical practices to verify the above.
In case of non-compliance, the Department's inspectors will take the measures provided for by the legislation, which include an out-of-court settlement of up to €4.000 or preparation of a report to the Attorney General for criminal prosecution.
