The Deputy Ministry of Culture announces the organization of an Information Workshop on the announcement of the competition in Cyprus for the institution "European Capital of Culture 2030".

The Workshop, which aims to provide information to representatives of cities interested in bidding for the title "European Capital of Culture 2030", will take place on Monday, 29 January 2024, from 09:00 to 13:30, at the Presidential Palace (Hall of Events).

The Workshop will be addressed by the Honourable Deputy Minister of Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou. Afterwards, Ms Sylvain Pasqua, an expert at the European Commission, will speak on the objectives, criteria and procedures of the European Capital of Culture. Ms Cristina Farinha, an expert and researcher on cultural heritage, culture and the creative industries sector, will then speak on how cities can make strategic use of culture.

It is recalled that the Ministry of Culture announced on 18 December 2023 the launch of the competition, through which the cities of Cyprus are invited to submit their application for the title of "European Capital of Culture 2030". The Deputy Ministry, as the Managing Authority, is responsible, in close cooperation with the European Commission, for the conduct of the competition procedures and the selection of the city that will receive the title of European Capital of Culture for the year 2030 in Cyprus.

According to the relevant European Union (EU) decisions, the title of European Capital of Culture 2030 will be awarded to one city in Cyprus, one city in Belgium and one city in a third country that is a candidate or potential candidate for EU membership.

This action is an EU initiative that aims to highlight the richness and diversity as well as the common cultural aspects in Europe, contributing to bringing its peoples closer together and improving mutual understanding.

On the website of the Ministry of State (www.culture.gov.cy/ecoc2030cy) further information is available regarding the Information Day on 29 January 2024, as well as further details regarding the call for proposals, the rules of the procedure, the objectives and criteria of the competition for the European Capital of Culture 2030.

Participation in the Information Day is indicated to be possible only by accepting the invitation. Interested parties should register their participation by 24.01.2024 at ecoc2030@culture.gov.cy or by phone at 22809813.
