The Department of Geological Survey of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that from Saturday, June 25, 2022 until today a persistent but mild seismic sequence is ongoing in the marine and terrestrial area of Limassol.
This is a seismic sequence with dozens of small earthquakes, with a maximum magnitude of M=2.9 on the Richter scale, which is developing in an area extending from the marine area, a few kilometres south of Germasogeia, to the terrestrial area, a few kilometres north of the Ayios Athanasios area. Of the number of earthquakes, seven were slightly felt by the residents of Limassol.
The earthquake is a natural phenomenon that is not predicted and the outcome of the current seismic sequence is impossible to predict. The Geological Survey Department monitors the evolution of the sequence, evaluates the seismological data and updates the website and Twitter account of the Seismological Centre (www.gsd-seismology.org.cy, @CY_earthquakes).
Due to the large amount of seismological data to be processed, information to the media will be provided through written announcements by the Department.
