On 3 June 2024, the Sponsorship Scheme for the mitigation of the spread of the Hare's Head in the coastal waters of Cyprus by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment will be implemented.

The purpose of the Plan is the mitigation of the species "Lagocephalus sceleratus" in the coastal zone of Cyprus by collective groups of fishermen and involves the application of intense targeted fishing pressure on the population of the species by the coastal commercial fleet of Cyprus.

Of the total amount, 70% is covered by the European Maritime Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFF) and the remaining 30% by the Republic of Cyprus. The funding rate to the beneficiaries is 100% (public expenditure).

Beneficiaries for applying for inclusion of proposals under the Scheme are "collective groups" of fishermen:

a) Category A or B fishing licence holders whose professional fishing vessels are registered in the Cyprus Register of Fishing Vessels (CFR) and members of one of the local fishermen's associations recognised by the Pancyprian Association of Professional Offshore Fishermen and

b) holders of a multi-purpose fishing licence, whose professional fishing vessels are registered in the Cyprus Register of Fishing Vessels (CFR) and are members of the Multipurpose Fishermen's Guild.

The remuneration of the beneficiaries who join the Scheme will be proportional to the total weight of the "rabbitheads" they catch and destroy. The compensation to be paid will be €4.73/kg.

The total budget of the Scheme is €595,000.

Applications can be submitted online from Monday, 3 June 2024 until Thursday, 3 October 2024.
