The vision of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research is the economic and social well-being of the fishing sector of Cyprus in a clean, healthy and productive marine environment.

Our history, our actions and our objectives are inextricably linked to the sustainable management of fisheries resources and, more generally, to the protection and conservation of the marine environment, so that we can continue to enjoy the precious goods that the aquatic element offers us. There is therefore no more appropriate day than World Oceans Day to celebrate 60 years of the Department.

On Saturday, 8 June at the Zygios fishing reserve from 17:00 to 20:00, young and old alike will have the opportunity to be informed and learn through interactive games about marine species and ways to protect them, Artificial Reefs and the fish of Cyprus. They will learn about the traditional profession of the fisherman and experience fishing through fishing tourism, as licensed fishing boats will conduct fishing trips etc.

Such an event could not be missing the delicacies with flavours from the sea. The well-known chefs Christos Christodoulou and Stavris Georgiou will take us to the world of gastronomy by cooking lionfish and tuna for all attendees. Marileni Stavrou and Haris Aristideou will accompany us with their music during the whole event!

We invite you all to the fishing shelter of Zygios to celebrate together the 60 years of our Department and the World Oceans Day! We protect the marine environment today, so that we can continue to enjoy all the benefits it has to offer us tomorrow!
