The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts considers that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is against the values of state sovereignty, freedom, democracy, peaceful resolution of disputes and mutual cooperation. These principles form the foundation of the Academy's founding purpose of cultivating and promoting the sciences, letters and arts on an international level through the promotion of equal cooperation, solidarity and dialogue between scientists, writers and artists.
The Cyprus Academy joins other Academies and Associations of Academies in condemning the invasion unequivocally, and expresses its support for the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences and the Ukrainian people as a whole. The Academy stresses that only through international cooperation, in equality and freedom, can the great problems that threaten the survival of humanity, such as climate change, infectious diseases and nuclear weapons, be solved.
Unilateral military actions, which violate international law, counteract and threaten to destroy what international cooperation, solidarity and free scientific and cultural dialogue have achieved. The Republic of Cyprus, which has been experiencing the consequences of such a military invasion for decades, knows that war exacerbates and prolongs problems, something that Europe itself has repeatedly learned from its own history.
