[PIO] Announcement of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts for the Cyprus Academy's House Award to Dr George Constantinou

The Plenary Assembly of the Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts unanimously decided to award a House Prize to Dr George Constantinou in recognition of his contribution to society and culture. The decision was taken at the 56th Ordinary Session of the Plenary Assembly of the Academy on 19.6.2024, on the proposal of the Order of Letters and Arts.

The House Prize is awarded to distinguished personalities in the sciences, letters or arts, with significant contributions and recognized achievements in their field. The Award is a recognition of personalities associated with Cyprus who have made a decisive contribution to the development of the sciences, letters or arts in Cyprus or abroad. The Award will be formally presented at the Academy's Gala Session in December 2024.

George Constantinou served the Department of Geological Survey of Cyprus since 1964, and as Director from 1980 to 1999. Under his leadership the Department initiated many pioneering projects, including mineral exploration, hydrogeological, microseismic, microzonal, neotectonic studies and contributed to the establishment of the automatic Cyprus Seismological Network.

After completing his studies at the Department of Physical Sciences of the University of Athens with honours in 1962, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, obtaining a PhD degree in Mineral Geology in 1972 with a scholarship from IKY. In 1975 he continued his postdoctoral research in geochemistry at the University of New Brunswick, Canada. He has published many papers, in the most prestigious international journals of archaeology and geology, and in the proceedings of many international conferences, based on projects carried out in Cyprus and other countries. The work he published with Ioannis Panagidis entitled "Cyprus and Geology. Science, Environment, Culture". He contributed to culture with the production of very important documentaries (mainly directed by Paschalis Papapetrou) such as "Troodos and Cyprus was born", "Pentadaktylos, so near... but so far", "On Cyprus Marble" and others.

He was a scientific collaborator of the Cyprus Standards Society - CYS for the introduction of the European Standards for building materials. George Constantinou was awarded the University of Cyprus Award (for 2015) for his contribution to Society and Culture.
