[PIO] Announcement of the Cultural Decentralisation Programme 2024

The leading institution of the Department of Contemporary Culture that embraces the whole of Cyprus

A panorama of cultural events of high artistic quality, which will include a wide range of arts, will be offered to the residents of the countryside: visual arts, theatre and shadow theatre performances, literary events, contemporary dance and music performances, as part of this year's Cultural Decentralisation Programme.

The Department of Contemporary Culture (DCC) of the Ministry of State for Culture notes that the interest of creators in the Programme this year was particularly high. In the context of its strategic objective of trying to ensure that the dissemination of culture is addressed to all social strata and groups, while aiming at the mobility of artists and meeting the aesthetic needs of a diverse audience, the Department announces that the Programme is as follows:

Visual arts:

  1. Visual arts exhibition of Iron Age ceramic art in Kalavasos, coordinated by Andreas Fassoulidis. With the central theme of Iron Age ceramic art in Kalavaso, the use of authentic geophysical materials and the creation of clay vessels using traditional methods will be exploited, enhancing cultural dialogue.
  2. Art exhibition "The War of Wines" by George Lazoglou. The exhibition aims to highlight the view of wine as an authentic protagonist/factor to influence artistic practice and contemporary thinking. The art exhibition and actions aim to trigger future research projects on the themes of winemaking, landscape and environment between communities of academics and artists.

Theatre and Shadow Theatre:

  1. Shadow Theatre "Hidden Treasure" with Vassilis Paphitis and Isel Seylani. Traditional shadow theatre is the most important form of performance in 500 years. The production aims to portray the traditional and historical characters of shadow theatre with a modern combination of humanistic values.
  2. "Marriage Proposal/The Bear: Two one-act plays" by Anton Chekhov with the Limassol Theatre Development Company (ETHAL) directed by Marina Vrontis. Following in the footsteps of "our" Aristophanes, Chekhov uses his satire subtly to criticise society with light humour.
  3. "Dead Brother's Dead Brother: A Tale of Strangeness" from the Idekanou Theatre. The production is a modern version on the chronologically oldest and most emblematic folk song of the same name, as it is found first in Asia Minor and then in all the countries of the Balkan peninsula as well as in Cyprus.
  4. Shadow theatre "Once upon a time, with Karagiozis in the village" with the Limassol Folklore Club. The activity will be in collaboration with the great in Greece carny player Athos Danellis, who shapes the story and the scenario in each community in order to emphasize various characteristics and important reference elements of each community.
  5. "Little Pharisees" by Dimitris Psathas from the Theatrical Multisite Hestia directed by Ai Paikos. "Little Pharisees" is a witty inventive satire with comic twists and clever dialogue.
  6. 'The Little Prince Quartet' by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry from the cultural association 'Vitamina'. An atmospheric mixture of live music and storytelling, aimed at audiences of all ages, directed by George Evagoros.

Literature[/U]

  1. "Alice and Philip travel the Library" with Angeliki Halchioopoulou as coordinator in cooperation with the Cyprus Union of Information Science Librarians (KEBEP). This activity aims to highlight the power of literature which stems from the author's connection and relationship with the world.
  2. "Literary routes awaken memories in marginal communities" with the Cyprus Children's Young People's Book Association (CYYBCA). A literary route of writers and poets along the Green Line starting from the barricade of Ledra Pallas. This route will be extended to other border communities.

Dance:[/U]

  1. "Wonder Room - Chamber" with Cathrine Art Organisation. A personal coming of age journey with the ultimate goal of reconciling with yourself and meeting the inevitable. Dramatization.
  1. "Metamorphosis" with the organization SELLAS. The performance is based on Kafka's play "The Metamorphosis" which studies the psyche of modern man. Performers: Maria Kaberi, Irini Andreou, Panagiota Nikolaou, Anastasia Dimitriadou (Nama Dama).

Music:

  1. "Women of Note" with Georgia Loizou as coordinator. Repertoire of classical concerts that will highlight the innovation of women in the field of music composition.
  2. Concert "George Kotsonis: the legacy of Aphrodite" with George Kalogeros. George Kotsonis left his indelible mark in the field of music and cultural heritage, where his compositions praised the struggles and struggles of the Cypriot people. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of the great Cypriot composer George Kotsonis (1937-2014), the concert is a unique tribute to his memory and presents his work in its entirety.
  3. "Sounds of Cyprus - Contemporary Style and Global Musical Influence" coordinated by the Community Council of Kapedos. The concert will be a vibrant celebration of cultural globalisation and the mutual influence between Cypriot tradition and global dynamics. It constitutes a narrative that highlights the transformative power of music in bridging cultures and promoting intercultural dialogue.
  4. "Costas Montis: Letters to Mother" by the Public Benefit Scientific and Cultural Foundation "Kostas Montis". A musical and theatrical monologue through which the poet expresses his anguish for what happened in critical years for Cyprus. Directed by Elena Hatziayaxenti.
  5. "I do not forget: I remember - I create - I sing" with Elena Mouzalas (EM Alternative Artistic Festival) as coordinator. The proposal illuminates the dynamic connection between past - present - future through works that, based on contemporary concerns, are inspired by various phases of our three thousand years of cultural past, thus illuminating with its beacon the unbroken continuity in the field of intellectual creation.
  6. Classical music "Antonio Vivaldi: Four Seasons" moderated by Andreas P. Nikolaou.
  7. "Flamenco - Jazz - Latin" with Mariza Anastasiadis and Rumba Attack. Artistic organization Antonis Koizas. Classic favorites, canzonettes and famous jazz hits performed by the exotic sounds of the Ensemble Rumba Attack and the voice of the lyrical soprano Mariza Anastasiadis, in a marriage of classical jazz, flamenco and Latin music will show that music has no limits.
  8. "On the Edge of the Coast: Windless Cyprus" by the Deneia Community Council, the musical performance "Memories of that July" will be presented by Christos Stassis' artistic ensemble Musiki Syνοδοιpoροι.
