The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts congratulates its Corresponding Member Professor Tony Kouzaridis, who received a Knighthood from the British Government for his contribution to health care, particularly in epigenetics, and the discovery of enzymes that contribute to the treatment of acute myeloid leukaemia and cancer.

Tony Couzarides, originally from Famagusta, was forced to emigrate to the UK after 1974. He is Professor of Cancer Biology at the University of Cambridge, Director of the Milner Therapeutics Institute and Senior Group Leader at the Gurdon Institute. He has been elected as a Corresponding Fellow of the Order of Science and has been awarded the Academy's 2020 Distinguished Fellow of the Republic of Cyprus.

Tony Kouzaridis' new distinction follows a number of other important awards he has received, including the Welcome Trust Medal, the Tenovus Medal in Molecular Medicine (UK), the Bodossaki Foundation Prize in Biology (Greece), the Bijvoet Medal (Netherlands), the Biochemical Society Award Novartis Medal and Prize (UK) and the Heinrich Wieland Prize (Germany), as well as his election as a Fellow of the British Academy of Medical Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
