[PIO] Announcement of the 3rd Annual Competition for the "Stella Soulioti" Human Rights Award

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announces the 3rd Annual Competition for the "Stella Soulioti" Human Rights Award and announces the opening today, Friday, October 13, 2023, of the submission of nominations or proposals for the year 2023. Interested parties may either submit a nomination or nominate other persons, groups or organisations for the Award by filling in the relevant special form, available via the links below.

The Award was established by a decision of the Council of Ministers taken on 2 June 2021, on the basis of a proposal by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This year, the Prize will be awarded during December 2023 (exact date to be announced at a later stage), on the occasion of the World Human Rights Day (which is commemorated every year on 10 December), to persons/groups/organizations that have demonstrated during the period of the last 12 months remarkable work and action in a field or fields directly related to the promotion and defence of human rights.

Nominations or proposals may be submitted by/for persons or groups of persons legally residing in Cyprus, as well as by/for Non-Governmental Organisations registered and active in the Republic of Cyprus. Please note that Government Agencies are excluded from applying for the award and from participating in the procedure. Active government officials and/or high-ranking public officials (e.g. Ministers, Directors-General, Commissioners, etc.) cannot nominate individuals/organisations for the award.

Based on the relevant decision of the Council of Ministers, the evaluation of nominations/nominations and the final selection will be made by a five-member Evaluation Committee consisting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (Chairman), the Minister of Justice, the Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights, as well as two personalities with a recognized contribution in the field of human rights.

The Award is accompanied by a cash prize of €10,000, which is offered for the purpose of supporting the activities of the person/group/organization to be awarded in the field of protection and promotion of human rights in Cyprus.

Completed application or nomination forms should be sent by post to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the address "Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 1447 Nicosia, Presidential Palace Avenue, 1447 Nicosia", with the indication "Human Rights Award" on the outside of the envelope.
