The Commissioner of Legislation and legal officials from her Office visited on 15.01.2024 the First Reception Centre "Pournara" in the framework of the recast of the Law on Refugees. Accompanied by officials of the Asylum Service, she was informed by the staff of the centre about the reception and identification procedures taking place at the First Reception Centre "Pournara", aiming at the effective recording and incorporation of these procedures in the text of the proposed Bill. A visit was also made to the Reception and Accommodation Centre for Applicants for International Protection (K.Y.F.A.D.P.) in the community of Kofinou.
The effort to recast the Law on Refugees, which was entrusted to the Commissioner for Legislation by decision of the Council of Ministers, is of crucial importance for an effective response to the migration issue in conjunction with the other measures taken by the Government. It was therefore considered important to provide information on the practical procedures on the ground in reception and accommodation centres.
The Bill provides, inter alia, for the creation of a Reception and Identification Section, the rapid processing of applications for international protection, the rapid adjudication of appeals, the administrative upgrading of procedures under the Refugee Law, the smoothing and strengthening of administrative cooperation between the competent authorities involved and the technological modernisation of procedures related to the application for international protection.
The Commissioner and her team thank the officials of the Asylum Service for organising the visit and providing detailed information on the procedures concerning the reception of third country nationals or stateless persons, the registration of their personal data, their medical examination, the care provided to vulnerable groups, the treatment of unaccompanied minors, the reception conditions in general, the procedure for filing and submitting the application for international protection as well as the gaps in the legislation identified by the officials.
