At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Finance on Friday 22 December 2023, the contract between the Nicosia Sewerage Board (BSC) and the European Investment Bank was signed for the financing of the upcoming project for the construction of sewerage systems in the areas of the Municipality of Idali and the communities of Pera Chorio - Nissou and Lympion.
The signature is, before the official inclusion of these areas, a sign of the State's response to the decades-long requests of the residents of Idali and Pera Chorio - Nissou for the construction of a sewerage network.
From the very first moment, the Council and the service of the PPA have been by the side of the residents and their just request. As a temporary measure and due to the serious problems that the delay was causing to the health and daily life of the citizens and although the area of Idali and Pera Chorio - Nissou had not been officially integrated, the PPA took a decision to transfer the wastewater coming from a limited existing drainage system in the core of Idali and Pera Chorio - Nissou to the PPA plant in Vatheia Gonia.
Following the continuous efforts of the Mayor of Idali and the community leaders together with the President and the Council of PPA, a decade of efforts are now coming to fruition.
The sewerage network of Idali, Far Chorio-Nisos and Libia will include a total length of approximately 200 km of gravity pipelines, 43 km of pressure pipelines, four main pumping stations and a number of local pumping stations and lift stations. The system will serve an equivalent population of approximately 32,000 inhabitants according to the 2023 census and a projected population of nearly 50,000 by the year 2050.
The estimated total construction cost will be in the range of EUR 70 million, with additional costs of approximately EUR 1.3 million for design and supply costs of the works and approximately EUR 4 million for supervision of the works.
The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.

Wastewater from the areas of Idaliou, Pera Chorio-Nisos and Lympion will be transferred for treatment to the Vathia Gonia Wastewater Treatment Plant, which is located nearby and already serves a significant part of the integrated Greater Nicosia Sewerage System.
It is worth noting that the Vathia Gonia Wastewater Treatment Plant, whose operation is based on membrane technology, was designed in 2008 with additional capacity to accommodate the expected increased wastewater from the project areas, thus negating a potential factor that could prevent the timely completion of the works and the provision of immediate service to end-users. The treated effluent from the plant is of high quality and can be fully utilised for irrigation purposes, contributing to the mitigation of the water scarcity problems faced by the country, which are expected to become more acute in the coming years.
The need to carry out these works stems from the Republic of Cyprus' accession obligations to the European Union (EU) under the provisions of the EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives and aims to improve the quality of life and public health.
