With regard to publications in the press and posts on social media regarding the Akamas National Forest Park, the Ministry of Interior wishes to inform the following:
- No permission has been granted by the relevant Departments and Agencies of the Ministry of Interior for the establishment of large developments on sites within the White Zones or other protection zones in the area. Relevant applications that have been submitted and concern the wider area of Akamas Forest are under consideration pending the required environmental opinion from the relevant departments. It is underlined that in relation to development permits in this area, the Ministry of Interior follows a very strict policy, under which all environmental requirements are strictly observed.
- In relation to allegations of illegal construction, widening and paving of Lara Road (Paphos-Akama road), it is clarified that this part of the road is located outside the boundaries of the current White Zone and concerns a Residential/Tourist Area, where residential development is allowed on the basis of the current provisions of the Regulatory Plan.
- With regard to complaints about unauthorized construction of retaining walls along the White River-Toxeutra-Lara road and embankments and berms on the slopes of the road and the bank of the White River, it is stated that the works carried out are in accordance with the Provisions for the Establishment and Operation of the Akamas Forest Park. The concurrence of the concerned Agencies/Departments had been obtained for the execution of the project.
In conclusion, it is emphasized that the preservation and protection of the natural wealth in Akama National Forest Park is a top priority for the Ministry of Interior and, to this end, all necessary measures are being taken in the formulation of policies pertaining to the Akama Area.
