On the occasion of World Cervical Cancer Eradication Day, the Department of Health would like to remind you that this is a very preventable malignancy. If detected early, the chance of cure is excellent.

Cervical cancer affects the lower part of the uterus. It is a type of cancer that can be easily diagnosed through the PAP test from a very early stage and can be fully cured. The Pap test is provided free of charge by the GESY every two years.

And it can be largely prevented by vaccination against the human papilloma virus (HPV) during adolescence.

HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is a DNA virus that infects the skin and mucous membranes. It is transmitted through physical contact and primarily through sexual contact.

The vaccine is administered free of charge for those eligible for the SHI through Personal Physicians and for those not eligible for the SHI through Maternity Protection Centres and Adult Vaccination Centres.

The vaccine is given to boys and girls aged 11 years to 13 years and 364 days, provided that the 1st dose is given within this limit.

The vaccine is given to boys and girls aged 11 years to 13 years and 364 days, provided that the 1st dose is given within this limit. Beneficiaries may receive the 2nd dose free of charge even if they have exceeded the age limit, but not later than six months after the administration of the 1st dose.

It is also given to people aged 18-26 years who are immunocompromised (including HIV infection).
