The National Strategy for the promotion of natural childbirth and the reduction of prematurity in Cyprus was approved today by the Council of Ministers.
The National Strategy will be an important tool to address the problem. It includes four Action Lines covering issues related to the Health System, Education of Health Professionals, Public Awareness and Research.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), caesarean section rates have been increasing worldwide over the last decades. As far as Cyprus is concerned, statistical data ranks it as one of the countries with the highest rates of caesarean section deliveries and with correspondingly high rates of prematurity.
The implementation of the National Strategy will promote the coordinated action of all competent bodies for the reduction of inappropriate caesarean sections and premature births under the general coordination of the Ministry of Health.
