The Ministry of Health announces that today, 5 January 2022:
- 4 people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 649.
- 205 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of whom 70 are in serious condition. 80% of those hospitalized have no history of vaccination.
- 18 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.
- A total of 130,076 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.
- 5,202 (positivity rate: 4%) new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 188,380.
Here are today's results in detail.
A. Deaths from COVID-19:
The 3 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:
- A woman, aged 84 years, who died on 4 January at Larnaca General Hospital.
- Male, 80 years old, who died on 5 January at Nicosia General Hospital.
- Female, 58 years old, who died on 5 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- Female, 58 years old, who died on 5 January in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
- Woman, 91 years old, who died on January 5 at Limassol General Hospital.
Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 649, of which:
- 411 males (63.3%), and
- 429 females (66.1%).
The average age of those who died from the disease is 76 years.
B. Inpatients:
In total, 205 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 70 are in serious condition or in PICU.
Of the 70 patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, 3 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) off ventilator and 39 in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):
Of the 130,076 diagnoses performed, 14,588 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 115,488 by the antigen rapid test method, 5202 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:
- 112 cases from 747 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
- 108 cases from 3,841 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
- 970 cases out of 9,510 samples taken through private initiative.
- 63 cases out of 467 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
- 2634 cases from 75,037 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
- 1315 cases out of 40,451 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
In addition, the following tests were performed without detecting a case:
- 0 cases from 2 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.
- 0 cases from 21 samples taken as part of audits in closed facilities.
