[PIO] Announcement by the Ministry of Health on new cases of COVID-19 - 28 December 2021

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 28 December 2021:

- No patient deaths with COVID-19 as the final cause of death were recorded, and therefore the total number of deaths remains 630.

- 168 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 84 are in serious condition. A proportion of 80.96% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 15 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 98,047 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 2241 (positivity rate: 2.29% new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by PCR and antigen rapid test, bringing the total number of cases to 154,926.

Here are the current results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

No deaths of patients with COVID-19 were recorded. Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 disease remains 630, of which:

- 402 males (63.8%), and

- 227 females (36.2%).

The average age of deaths from the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 168 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 84 are in serious condition or on NSAIDs.

Of the 84 patients in serious condition, 27 are intubated, 8 are in an Intensive Care Unit off ventilator and 49 in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 98,047 diagnoses performed, 11,803 were performed by the molecular method (PCR) and 86,244 by the antigen rapid test method, 2241 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 220 cases from 1,671 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 76 cases out of 5,643 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 389 cases out of 4,068 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 26 cases out of 366 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 1046 cases from 60,052 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 483 cases out of 26,192 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 1 case from 55 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
