[PIO] Announcement by the Ministry of Health on new cases of COVID-19 - 27 December 2021

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 27 December 2021:

- 2 people died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 630.

- 161 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 78 are in serious condition. A proportion of 80.75% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 15 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 121,127 molecular (PCR) and antigen rapid tests have been performed.

- 1925 (positivity rate: 1.59% new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by PCR and antigen rapid test, bringing the total number of cases to 152,685.

Here are the current results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 2 persons who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:

- Female, aged 79 years, who died on 27 December in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

- A man, aged 75, who died on 27 December at Famagusta General Hospital.

Consequently, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 630, of which:

- 402 men (63.8%), and

- 228 women (36.2%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 161 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 78 are in serious condition or in NSAIDs.

Of the 78 patients in serious condition, 27 are intubated, 4 are in an Intensive Care Unit off the ventilator and 47 in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test):

Of the 121,127 diagnoses performed, 12,917 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 108,210 by the antigen rapid test method, 1925 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 164 cases from 1,979 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  2. 44 cases out of 5,626 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  3. 388 cases out of 4,462 samples taken through private initiative.
  4. 13 cases out of 502 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  5. 926 cases from 80,407 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  6. 384 cases out of 27,803 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  7. 6 cases from 348 specimens obtained under the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and screening of special groups through the Public Health Clinics.
