[PIO] Announcement by the Ministry of Health on new cases of COVID-19 - 25 December 2021

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 25 December 2021:

- 1 person died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 628.

- 157 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 63 are in serious condition. A proportion of 75.65% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 13 post-COVID patients who ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 16,231 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

- 268 (positivity rate: 1.65% new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by the PCR and antigen rapid tests, bringing the total number of cases to 149,848.

Here are today's results in detail.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 1 person who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 was:

- Male, aged 76 years, who died on 25 December at Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 628, of which:

- 401 males (63.9%), and

- 227 females (36.1%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 157 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 63 are in serious condition or in PICU.

Of the 63 patients in serious condition, 24 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit outside of a ventilator and 35 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

C. Positive cases COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 16,231 diagnoses carried out, 7,073 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 9,158 by the antigen rapid test, 268 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

  1. 53 cases from 5,017 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  2. 82 cases out of 1,897 samples taken through private initiative.
  3. 7 cases out of 159 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  4. 126 cases from 9,158 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.

There are currently no rapid tests performed through the Ministry of Health program.
