[PIO] Announcement by the Ministry of Health on new cases of COVID-19 - 20 December 2021

The Ministry of Health announces that today, 20 December 2021:

- 3 people have died from COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 623.

- 179 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of whom 60 are in serious condition. A proportion of 81.01% of hospitalized patients have no history of vaccination.

- 15 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases) continue to be hospitalized intubated in serious condition due to COVID in an ICU.

- A total of 106,483 tests have been performed to detect the disease by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test (antigen rapid test).

- 835 (positivity rate: 0.78% new cases of COVID-19 have been detected by PCR and antigen rapid test, bringing the total number of cases to 145,996.

The current results are detailed below.

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The 3 individuals who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 were:

- Male, aged 68 years, who died on 20 December in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital;

- Female, aged 83 years, who died on 20 December in Larnaca General Hospital.

- Female, aged 83 years, who died on 20 December in Larnaca General Hospital.

- Male, aged 92, who died on 19 December at Famagusta General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 623, of which:

- 397 males (63.7%), and

- 226 females (36.3%).

The average age of those who died from the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Inpatients:

In total, 179 patients with COVID-19 are hospitalized in the hospitals of the OCYPY, of which 60 are in serious condition or on NSAIDs.

Of the 60 patients in serious condition, 23 are intubated, 1 is in an Intensive Care Unit off a ventilator and 36 are in an Intensive Care Unit.

Γ. Positive cases

COVID-19 (PCR test and antigen rapid test): Of the 106,483 diagnoses performed, 11,586 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 94,897 by the antigen rapid test, 835 cases of COVID-19 were identified, resulting in the following:

49 cases from 743 samples obtained through the contact tracing procedure of already confirmed cases.
  1. 49 cases from 6,605 samples taken during passenger screening at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  2. 137 cases out of 3,624 samples taken through private initiative.
  3. 7 cases out of 167 samples taken by the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals.
  4. 421 cases from 62,678 samples tested by the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  5. 170 cases out of 32,219 samples tested by the antigen rapid test through the Ministry of Health programme.
  6. 2 cases from 446 specimens obtained under the Personal Physician Referral and Special Group Screening Program through the Public Health Clinics.
  7. In addition, the following investigations were carried out without detecting a case:
0 cases from 1 sample taken as part of audits in closed facilities.
