Yesterday, 8 March 2022, the dispatch of Cyprus' first humanitarian aid package to the suffering people of Ukraine was completed. The humanitarian aid will be transported by cargo ship to Thessaloniki and subsequently to Poland, where an EU Civil Protection Mechanism collection and distribution point is operating in cooperation with the Polish authorities.
The humanitarian aid comprises a total of 150 tonnes of material, including 80 tonnes of food aid (baby food, flour, long-life food), civil protection equipment (sleeping bags, blankets, tents, biological toilets), 13 tonnes of medical/pharmaceutical supplies, 5000 pairs of footwear, 22500 litres of bottled water, an electricity generator, personal hygiene items, medical consumables and other essentials.
The large volume of humanitarian aid that has been collected, in addition to the contributions of the various departments of the state, is also the result of contributions from private individuals and is proof of Cyprus' practical solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
It is noted that the collection of the aid was coordinated by the Commissioner for Citizens, in cooperation with other authorities of the Republic, such as the Ministry of Health, the Civil Defence, the National Guard and the Port Authority, while the mission was arranged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the expenses were covered by the humanitarian aid line of the Ministry's budget.
